One of our critical goals at MSOS is to help each child become successful and confident readers and writers. Your partnership is critical and we invite you to attend our upcoming literacy workshops. Our first 30-minute virtual workshop is scheduled on Wednesday, February 2, called “Growing Young Readers” is tailored for parents of children in grades K-3. You will walk away with many helpful resources to support your child’s literacy development at home. Parents may register for either a morning workshop at 9:00 am or an evening workshop at 5:30 pm.
COVID Impact on Literacy Development: COVID-19 has caused unprecedented disruption to schools worldwide and has affected more specifically the development of students’ foundational reading skills. Our teachers have been:
- Working hard to meet the literacy challenges that some of our students are facing.
- Attending workshops on supporting the continuation of teaching and learning during the COVID-19 pandemic.
- Adaptive and flexible while supporting students emotionally and academically.
How is MSOS Prioritizing Literacy Development?
- We are compiling data from STAR Renaissance and weekly progress reports to monitor student growth and needs.
- We are enhancing a literacy-rich environment through daily DEAR (drop everything and read), school-wide StoryWalks, MSOS Storytime, weekly book bags and Fry Word Fridays.
- We are developing our students’ digital literacy skills by providing safe research and learning platforms to facilitate student learning and supporting students with being able to find, understand, evaluate and safely use information.
- Students are receiving one-to-one reading support and participating in small reading groups.
- We are embedding social emotional learning into our literacy to create a positive and safe environment where students feel ready to read and learn.
